Bonnie and Clyde

Shootout at the Red Crown Tavern and Tourist Cabins

Red Crown Tourist Court: A Missouri Landmark with a Notorious Past

The Red Crown Tourist Court proudly stands near Platte City, Missouri, as a captivating historical site intricately linked to the legendary tale of Bonnie and Clyde. Established in 1931, the Red Crown complex boasted a service station, a bustling restaurant, and a charming collection of tourist cabins, all designed with matching red brick and striking red tile roofs. Strategically located just off U.S. Route 71, it served as an essential stop for adventurous travelers during the early days of American road trips.

The site gained fame in July 1933. It briefly hosted one of the most notorious criminal groups of the era: the Barrow gang. Bonnie Parker, Clyde Barrow, Clyde’s brother Buck, Buck’s wife Blanche, and fellow outlaw W.D. Jones checked into two cabins while on the run from law enforcement. Their unusual behavior—covering windows, ordering large meals, and appearing nervous—aroused suspicion from staff and locals. The manager, Neal Houser, alerted the authorities, who soon surrounded the property.

The resulting shootout in the early hours of July 20, 1933, saw the heavily armed Barrow gang exchange gunfire with Sheriff Holt Coffey and his officers. Though two lawmen and several gang members were wounded, Bonnie and Clyde’s group managed a narrow escape. Buck Barrow, however, was mortally wounded and captured days later, dying from his injuries. This gun battle marked a turning point for the gang, who found themselves more relentlessly pursued than ever before.

The Red Crown buildings survived well into the 21st century. The service station and cabins were repurposed for various commercial uses over time. Today, the property remains a point of interest for both crime history enthusiasts and travelers. It offers a rare glimpse into the real sites of America’s criminal folklore.
