Al Capone’s Valentine: A Massacre That Shocked the World

When Police Uniforms Became Murder Disguises

The location housed the S-M-C Cartage Company warehouse, which served as a garage where members of Bugs Moran’s (pictured) North Side Gang would hang out. On that fateful Valentine’s Day morning, Al Capone’s henchmen, disguised as police officers, lined up seven members and associates of the North Side Gang against the garage wall and executed them in what became one of the most notorious organized crime incidents in American history.

Crime Scene Public Drive up

The original building no longer exists. By 1967, the site at 2122 N. Clark Street had become empty and was targeted by the urban renewal movement that was transforming much of the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Today, the location remains unmarked, with no memorial or plaque indicating its dark historical significance.
