She Asked for Help. She Deserved a Future: The Story of Kelsey Miller

She refused to shoot her husband. Prosecutors say he killed her instead.

I’ve read that more than once, and it still stops me.

Kelsey Danielle Miller-Rozmiarek was 28, an aspiring artist raising three children. She grew up in Columbus, Nebraska, graduated from Lakeview High School in 2004, and settled in Lincoln.

Before she disappeared, Kelsey sought help for domestic violence. Court reporting described bruises on her neck and her account that her husband, Kevin “Mike” Miller, had strangled her. A domestic-abuse organization contacted police.

She asked for help. That’s the part that stays with me.

Investigators said Kevin killed her on Thanksgiving morning, November 27, 2014. Prosecutors believed he attacked her after she refused his request to shoot him. Kevin later told the court he had colon and stomach cancer.

According to investigators, he struck Kelsey with a baseball bat and shot her three times. Reporting on the prosecution’s case described him dismembering her body in their shower, placing her remains in buckets and totes inside his Suburban, and moving them into a storage locker.

While her family searched, Kevin knew where she was.

Kelsey was reported missing on December 1. Six days later, the search ended at Big Red Self Storage on Custer Street in Lincoln. According to reporting citing a police affidavit, Kevin had asked a friend to rent the unit. That friend became suspicious, checked the locker, and discovered remains with tattoos matching Kelsey’s.

Imagine hoping for a phone call—and getting that news.

Kevin pleaded no contest to first-degree murder and a firearm charge in April 2015. On June 2, he received life without parole plus a consecutive 50-year sentence. Kelsey’s relatives said they believed he had shown no remorse.

He died in custody in August 2022 at 41. Officials said he was receiving treatment for a medical condition; the reporting did not establish his cause of death.

I keep coming back to her age. Twenty-eight. The artwork she never got to create. The birthdays and ordinary afternoons with her children she never got to have.

We can finish reading and keep scrolling. Her children have had to keep growing up without her.

Kelsey asked for help. How do we make sure the next person who reaches out gets the chance to grow old?
