Moorgate Train Disaster Memorial

The Moorgate train disaster happened on February 28, 1975, when a Northern City Line train failed to stop at Moorgate station in London. Instead of slowing into the terminal platform, the train carried on into the dead-end tunnel and hit the wall beyond the platform. Forty-three people died, including the driver, and 74 people were injured, making it the worst peacetime disaster in London Underground history. The official inquiry found no mechanical fault with the train and no clear medical explanation for the driver’s actions, which is part of why the case still has that unanswered feeling around it. After the crash, safety changes were made for trains entering terminal platforms, including tighter speed controls and improved stopping protection.
