Wedgwood Baptist Church Shooting

On September 15, 1999, Wedgwood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, was holding a youth prayer and worship gathering when Larry Gene Ashbrook entered the church and opened fire. The event was connected to See You at the Pole, and many of the people there were teenagers. By the end of the attack, seven people had been killed and seven others were wounded. Ashbrook died by suicide inside the church.

The victims were Kristi Beckel, Cassandra Griffin, Joseph Ennis, Justin Ray, Sydney Browning, Shawn Brown, and Susan “Kim” Jones. The shooting left the Fort Worth community shaken, especially because it happened in a place that was supposed to feel safe. Even years later, the reason Ashbrook chose Wedgwood Baptist Church has never been fully answered.

Today, the Wedgwood Baptist Church shooting is remembered as one of Fort Worth’s darkest true crime cases. It is also remembered for the victims, the survivors, and a congregation that had to face grief in a very public way while trying to heal.
