The Barrow Family Station: A Forgotten Dallas Landmark

A modest gas station once stood at 1221 Singleton Boulevard in West Dallas. It played a small but memorable role in the Bonnie and Clyde story. Known as the Barrow Family Filling Station, it was built in the early 1930s by Clyde Barrow’s father, Henry Barrow. He moved the family’s house to the site. He used an insurance payout to open the station. The family also lived there.

Clyde himself didn’t live there full-time. Still, this was home base for the Barrow family. During their crime spree, Bonnie and Clyde made headlines across the country. After their deaths in 1934, the Barrows continued running the station, but trouble followed. In 1938, Clyde’s mother, Cumie Barrow, was shot outside the station, losing sight in one eye. The building was also firebombed multiple times.

In 2022, despite efforts to preserve it, the historic building was demolished. A car wash is now planned for the site.

The Barrow Family Filling Station may be gone, but it remains an important chapter in Dallas's colorful past—offering a rare glimpse into the personal side of one of America’s most infamous crime duos.We managed to grab this souvenir on a trip shortly after the building was demolished. I still find it difficult to believe that this building wasn't able to be saved, or at the very least relocated.
