The Tragic Story of Vicki Wegerle: A BTK Victim

On September 16, 1986, Dennis Rader, disguised as a telephone repairman, knocked on Vicki Wegerle’s door and requested to check her telephone lines inside her home. Once granted entry, Rader feigned inspecting the telephone lines before pulling out a pistol when Vicki’s back was turned. He then led her to the bedroom, where he tied her up using materials found within the house. Unfortunately, the makeshift restraints broke during the ensuing struggle, prompting Vicki to fight for her life vigorously. Despite her resistance, Rader eventually managed to subdue her and used a nylon stocking to strangle her to death. Vicki Wegerle, aged 28, had her son present during the horrific incident, although he was unharmed. Initially, investigators did not connect her murder to the BTK killer and instead focused their attention on her husband. It wasn’t until 16 years later that the police linked her death to Dennis Rader, providing closure to the case.
